[Hari Lahan Basah Sedunia]

Tanggal 2 Februari kemarin diperingati sebagai Hari Lahan Basah Sedunia. Hari peringatan dimulai sejak 2 Februari 1971 dengan disepakatinya Konvensi Ramsar, yaitu suatu perjanjian internasional tentang lahan basah. Indonesia sendiri masuk menjadi anggot pada tahun 1991
Jadi, apa itu lahan basah?
Menurut Konvensi Ramsar, lahan basalah adalah ”Daerah-daerah rawa, payau, lahan gambut, dan perairan: alami atau buatan; tetap atau sementara; dengan air yang tergenang atau mengalir, tawar, payau atau asin; termasuk wilayah perairan laut yang kedalamannya tidak lebih dari enam meter pada waktu air surut”.
Pentingnya buat kita apa?
Banyak juga sih. Tema perayaan tahun ini adalah “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future” untuk menyoroti pentingnya lahan basah untuk urbanisasi. Lahan basah perkotaan mensuplai kota dengan air dan merupakan lingkungan hijau. Lahan basah juga dapat menyerap air hujan berlebih sehingga dapat mencegah banjir atau bencana lain. Vegetasi yang ada berperan juga sebagai filter untuk limbah domestik dan industry.
Sayangnya, seiring berkembangya pembangunan, lahan basah seringkali disalahgunakan, misalnya menjadi tempat penimbunan limbah atau dikonversikan menjadi kegunaan lain. Padahal jika dimanfaatkan dengan baik, lahan basah dapat memberikan keuntungan ekonomis dan sosial bagi kota itu sendiri.
Nah, di bulan Oktober 2018 nanti aka ada penganugerahan untuk kota-kota yang memanajemen lahan basahnya dengan baik (Wetland City Accreditation). Ini merupakan yang pertama kalinya loh, semoga kota-kota Indonesia masuk ya!
