Karantina tanaman merupakan tindakan untuk mencegah penyebaran hama dan penyakit tanaman. Akan tetapi, negara Indonesia sangat rentan dalam masalah penyakit tanaman ini, karena sebagian besar benih tanaman di Indonesia adalah impor. Akibatnya, baru-baru ini ditemukan penyakit tanaman golongan A1 dari tanaman cabai yang berasal dari Tiongkok ke Bogor, Jawa Barat.
Pak Widodo, kepala Klinik Tanaman Departemen Proteksi tanaman IPB, mengatakan, terus berlangsungnya impor benih baik melalui program pemerintah maupun perdagangan umum akan menjadi tantangan yang berat, karena penyakit yang sudah masuk di suatu negara sulit dihilangkan.
Sebelumnya, pihak imigrasi menangkap empat warga negara Tiongkok karena kedapatan berprofesi menjadi petani ilegal. Mereka menanam cabai di atas lahan seluas empat hektar di lahan daerah Kecamatan Sukamakmur, Kabupaten Bogor, Jawa Barat.
Berdasarkan hasil uji laboratorium yang diterbitkan oleh Balai Besar Uji Standar Karantina Pertanian, ternyata benih cabai yang ditanam positif mengandung bakteri “Erwinia chrysantemi” yang merupakan OPTK golongan A1 yang sekarang telah masuk ke Indonesia.
